While there’s nothing like having some experience under your belt, Business Process Management (BPM) certifications can aid analysts in some key ways: they serve as concrete evidence of business process management knowledge; offer the opportunity to learn new concepts /best practices; and benefit from the experience of trainers/mentors.
While some of these certifications are offered by professional organizations, others have been put together by software vendors. You will also find a variety of training programs that offer certificates on successful completion of their courses; these are outside the scope of this article.
To help you get started, we’ve put together a list (in no particular order of preference) of some of the business process management certifications available today, to serve as a guide.
The Certified Business Process Professional (CBPP) certification from the Association of Business Process Management Professionals International (ABPMP International) is based on the BPM Common Body of Knowledge (BPM CBOK) and can be earned by having 4 years’ process management, process improvement, or process transformation experience and completing an exam consisting of 130 multiple-choice questions. This certification can lead to a more advanced one known as the Certified Business Process Leader (CBPL). Analysts with less than a year’s experience can however, opt for the Certified Business Process Associate Certification. More information on the different types of certification and qualification criteria are available on the ABPMP website.
